PHILIP J. DOHERTY – in Woburn, March 17th. Beloved husband of Ruth L. (O’Doherty) Doherty. Devoted father of James P. and his wife Alice, Julie M. Carpenter and her husband Peter, Susan R. Winkle and her husband George, Peter C. and his wife Karen, Timothy M., Philip J., Jr. and his wife Elaine, and Thomas P. and his wife Diane, all of Woburn. Father-in-law of Lori Doherty of Burlington. Dear brother of Charles Doherty of Peabody and the late William, James, Neil, Daniel & Joseph. Also survived by 25 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. Funeral from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Tuesday, March 20th at 8:15 a.m. Funeral mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main St., Woburn, at 9. Calling hours Monday 5 to 8 p.m. Interment in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn. Donations may be made in Phil’s memory to St. Charles School, 8 Myrtle Street, Woburn, MA 01801.

OBITUARY:

Philip J. Doherty, a lifelong resident of Woburn, died peacefully on Saturday, March 17th, at his home, surrounded by his family. The beloved husband of Ruth L. (O’Doherty) Doherty for over sixty-four years, he was eighty-three years of age.

Born and raised in Woburn, he was the son of the late James and Mary (Kelly) Doherty. He graduated from Woburn High School and was a veteran of World War II, having served with the US Navy aboard the USS Panamint.

After the war, he went to work at Monsanto Chemical Company, from which he retired after forty years. Following his retirement he worked at Colonial Package Store at Woburn’s Four Corners.

Phil was preceded in death by five brothers: William, James, Neil, Daniel and Joseph.

In addition to his wife Ruth, he is survived by their seven children: James P. and his wife Alice, Julie M. Carpenter and her husband Peter, Susan R. Winkle and her husband George, Peter C. and his wife Karen, Timothy M., Philip J., Jr. and his wife Elaine, and Thomas P. and his wife Diane, all of Woburn.

He was the dear father-in-law of Lori Doherty of Burlington, brother of Charles Doherty of Peabody, and the beloved grandfather of 25 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Tuesday, March 20th at 8:15 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn, at 9. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn.

Relatives and friends are invited to call at the funeral home on Monday from 5 to 8 p.m. Donations may be made in Phil’s memory to St. Charles School, 8 Myrtle Street, Woburn, MA 01801.
