ROBERTA D. “BERTA” (KEATING) BATES – in Merrimack, NH, February 25th. Beloved wife of the late George Bates. Dear sister of Bernard C. Keating & his wife Judy of Somerville and Carolyn McElheney of Woburn. Loving aunt of Michele and Stephen Keating. Also survived by several cousins. Funeral from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Friday, March 2nd at 10:45 a.m. Funeral mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn, at 11:30. Calling hours Thursday 4 to 8 p.m. Interment in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn. Donations may be made in Berta’s memory to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.

OBITUARY:

Roberta D. “Berta” Bates of Manchester, New Hampshire, a native of Woburn, passed away on Sunday, February 25th, at the age of seventy. She was the wife of the late George Bates.

Born in Woburn, she was the daughter of the late William T. and Frances D. (Smith) Keating. She attended Woburn schools and graduated from Woburn High School with the Class of 1954.

From the time she finished high school until her retirement in 1996, she was employed by Commercial Union Insurance Company as a computer operator. Before taking up residence in Manchester, New Hampshire after her retirement, she had lived in Methuen for a number of years.

“Berta,” as she was known to family and friends, loved dancing and bowling in her free time. She belonged to several bowling leagues when she worked for Commercial Union. She was a generous person, giving a great deal of her time to volunteer work, and was particularly active in Helping Hands of Manchester.

Mrs. Bates was the dear sister of Bernard C. Keating & his wife Judy of Somerville and Carolyn McElheney of Woburn, and loving aunt of Michele and Stephen Keating. Also surviving are several cousins.

The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Friday, March 2nd at 10:45 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn, at 11:30. Interment will follow in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Donations may be made in Berta’s memory to the American Cancer Society, 30 Speen Street, Framingham, MA 01701.
