EUGENE F. MATTHEWS – in Woburn, February 20th. Beloved husband of Marguerita “Margo” (Leahy) Matthews. Devoted father of William F., Jeanne F., and Monica M. Matthews, all of Woburn. Predeceased by his twin brother Bernard, his brother Frederick, and his sisters, Mary Coleman, Alice McKenna and Margaret Matthews. Loving grandfather of Daniel and Sean Matthews, Alison and David Kee, and Jamie Lee Matthews. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Funeral from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Saturday, February 24th at 9:15 a.m. Funeral mass in St. Barbara’s Church, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn, at 10. Calling hours Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn. Donations may be made in Gene’s memory to the Jeanne Jugan Residence, Little Sisters of the Poor, 186 Highland Avenue, Somerville, Massachusetts 02143-1595.

OBITUARY:

Eugene F. Matthews, a resident of Woburn’s West Side for over fifty years, passed away peacefully here Tuesday afternoon, February 20th, following a lengthy illness. The husband of Marguerita “Margo” (Leahy) Matthews, he was eighty-six years of age.

Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Michael Frederick and Mary Ann (Lavelle) Matthews. He was raised in Somerville and graduated from Somerville High School with the Class of 1938. A veteran of World War II, he served in combat with the 329th Infantry.

For forty-one years, Mr. Matthews was employed as a brakeman by the Boston & Maine Railroad. He held membership in the United Transportation Workers Union, the VFW, the George Campbell Post 101 American Legion, and the DAV.

Gene was known for his great sense of humor and enjoyed keeping people entertained with his jokes, even through his illness of recent years. He was also an avid Red Sox fan.

Preceding him in death were his twin brother Bernard, his brother Frederick, and his sisters, Mary Coleman, Alice McKenna and Margaret Matthews.

Surviving along with his wife Margo are a son, William F. Matthews of Woburn, and two daughters, Jeanne F., and Monica M. Matthews, both of Woburn. He was also the loving grandfather of Daniel and Sean Matthews, Alison and David Kee, and Jamie Lee Matthews. Also surviving are many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Saturday, February 24th at 9:15 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in St. Barbara’s Church, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn, at 10. Interment will follow in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Donations may be made in Gene’s memory to the Jeanne Jugan Residence, Little Sisters of the Poor, 186 Highland Avenue, Somerville, Massachusetts 02143-1595.

    I was saddened to learn of “Bucko’s” passing.

    I was away at the time but would have come for the services.

    I have many memories of him always cracking a joke.

    My thoughts and prayers are with you all.

    Our deepest sympathys go with you at this time. He was a great guy, certainly he gave us all many laughs. We the girls and I enjoyed seeing him when we attended Judys funeral.
