OBITUARY:

Richard W. Bird, 64, of Brockton, brother of several Woburn residents, passed away on Tuesday, September 19th, at South Shore Hospital in Weymouth following an illness of several months. He was the husband of Elizabeth “Liz” Davis for over thirty-seven years.

Dick was born in Boston, son of the late Joseph H. and Mildred F. (Scolley) Bird. When his father, who was among the Marines involved in the fighting at Iwo Jima during World War II, died at a young age, his mother later remarried and Dick was raised by his stepfather, the late Jack Gunning. He was raised in Brookline and graduated from Brookline High School.

A gifted artist, he was a graduate of the New England Institute of Art. Although he worked as a supervisor in the maintenance department at Brockton Hospital for over thirty years, his passion in life was art. He was talented in many genres, including watercolors, oils, portraits, and stills. His love of nature was often reflected in his work, which he generously donated, often anonymously, to others. A private person, his greatest joy was in giving, and he believed in giving without fanfare or recognition.

Surviving along with his wife Liz are his beloved children, Richard Bird of Brockton, John Scanlon of Marshfield, and Kathy and James Scanlon, both of Washington, his siblings, Geri Fonseca of Woburn, Margaret “Peggy” McCarthy, Wayne Bird of FL, and Charles Bird, John Paul Gunning, Mildred “Mickey” Ortiz, Donna Morales, and Robin Rodriguez, all of Woburn.

He was also the loving grandfather of Eric Bird. Private memorial services will be held at the convenience of the family. There are no calling hours.
