OBITUARY:

Ruth P. Yennaco, a well-known Woburn resident who volunteered countless hours for the city’s elderly, passed away late Wednesday, July 5th at the age of 83. She was the wife of the late Francis “Frank” Yennaco, who died in 1984.

Born in Malden, she was the daughter of the late James and Margaret (Mahoney) Sullivan. Following her graduation from high school, she worked for New England Telephone Company as a switchboard operator. She met her husband Frank in 1949 and they married in 1951. After spending the first few years of the marriage in Medford, they moved to Woburn’s West Side in 1957, where they raised their family. Ruth worked for Woolworth’s after her children were grown.

A warm and welcoming woman, she shared her love of music and dancing with everyone she met. She was often the last to leave the dance floor at a party, outlasting even the youngest in her group. She taught herself to play the piano, and entertained students at the Reeves Elementary School and later at the Woburn Senior Center. Her greatest joy was in helping others, in recent years volunteering many hours working with the elderly.

She enjoyed many camping vacations over the years in Bolton, Mass., as well as in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. She was happiest when she was spending time with her family and her grandchildren were very special to her.

In addition to her husband Frank, she was preceded in death by her sister, Margaret Collins.

Surviving are a daughter, Patricia Matusow and her husband Harry of Cherry Hill, NJ, two sons, Robert and his wife Jean of Woburn, and James and his wife Cindy of Pepperell, two sisters, Irene Pinkham of Peabody and Annemarie MacGillvary of Melrose. Also surviving are ten grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held in the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Saturday, July 8th at 10 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Interment will be in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.

Calling hours are on Friday from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.

Donations may be made in Mrs. Yennaco’s memory to the Woburn Senior Center, 144 School Street, Woburn, MA 01801.
