EFFIE M.(GRADY) RICE in Woburn, Wednesday, May 10th, beloved wife of the late John Rice. Devoted mother of Catherine V. Sweeney and her husband Larry of OH, Frederick J. Rice and his wife Rosanne of NH, Marilyn L. Rice of Woburn, Barbara R. Guiney and her husband John of Royalston, Daniel J. Rice and his wife Lisa of MD, Linda J. Gauthier of NH, Stephen G. Rice and his wife Carol of Woburn and Jonathan S. Rice of NH. Dear sister of Catherine Murphy of Quincy, Eileen McCormick of Woburn, Alice Sullivan of FL and sister-in-law of Sr. Catherine Rice, SND of Ipswich. Loving grandmother of twelve grandchildren and one great grandchild. A Funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Friday, May 12th at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn at 10. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.

OBITUARY:

Effie M. (Grady) Rice, a longtime resident of Woburn, passed away Wednesday, May 10th, surrounded by her children, at the Winchester Hospital. The beloved wife of the late John F. Rice, she was eighty-two years of age.

Born in Gloucester, Effie was the daughter of the late Daniel and Jessie (Cameron) Grady. Her family later moved to East Boston where she and her three sisters were raised and educated. Effie was a graduate of East Boston High School and went on to Secretarial School. She worked as a secretary for a few years before meeting her husband John, to whom she was devoted for forty-five years. After their marriage, they made their home in the South End of Woburn, where they resided and raised their eight children.

A dedicated mother, Effie remained at home and was actively involved in all of her children’s activities including being a ???Den Mother???.

Most in her life, she cherished spending time with her family, especially at the holidays. She will always be remembered for her wonderful cooking, especially her delicious desserts at Christmastime. As well as her children, Effie spent countless hours in her backyard enjoying the company of her sisters.

In addition, she enjoyed playing cards, particularly cribbage and also played weekly Bingo. She was a terrific dancer and an avid bowler. She took great interest in following hockey, football and baseball. Effie was also a member of the Immaculate Conception Sodality for many years.

In later years, ???Ma Rice???, as she was lovingly known, was blessed with several grandchildren and a great-grandchild, with whom she loved to spend time.

Effie was preceded in death by her husband, John, who passed away in 1995.

She is survived by her children, Catherine V. Sweeney and her husband Larry of Ohio, Frederick J. Rice and his wife Rosanne of New Hampshire, Marilyn L. Rice of Woburn, Barbara R. Guiney and her husband John of Royalston, Daniel J. Rice and his wife Lisa of MD, Linda J. Gauthier of New Hampshire, Stephen G. Rice and his wife Carol of Woburn and Jonathan S. Rice of New Hampshire, her sisters, Catherine Murphy of Quincy, Eileen McCormick of Woburn, Alice Sullivan of Florida, her sister-in-law, Sr. Catherine Rice, SND of Ipswich, her loving grandchildren and great- grandchild.

The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Friday, May 12th at 9:15 a.m., followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn at 10. Interment will follow in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn. Calling hours will be held on Thursday from 4 to 8 p.m.

    I was sad to hear that your Mom had passed on. She was such a very sweet Lady! A gentle Lady.

    She had a wondeful life and built a wonderful family. She was very proud of you all.
