Elizabeth M. (Flaherty) Doherty, a lifelong resident of Woburn, passed away peacefully at the Woburn Nursing Center on Tuesday evening, April 11th. The beloved wife of the late Joseph E. Doherty, she was one hundred years of age.
Born in Woburn, Elizabeth was the last surviving daughter of the late Michael and Elizabeth (Harkins) Flaherty. Her paternal grandparents immigrated from Inishmaan, the Aran Islands, County Galway, and her maternal grandparents immigrated from Donagh Parish, County Donegal in Ireland and settled in Woburn in the 1860s.
Mrs. Doherty was educated in the Woburn Public Schools and was a graduate of Woburn High School in 1923. After high school, she worked at the Registry of Motor Vehicles in Boston and later was employed by Woburn Public School System. Mrs. Doherty was a secretary in the Principals Office at Woburn High School, a position she held for many years before retiring in 1975 at the age of seventy.
In 1930, Elizabeth wed her beloved husband, Joseph Doherty, in St. Charles Parish Church. They made their home in Woburn where they raised their son.
Mrs. Doherty or Aunt Betty”, as she was lovingly known by her family, was a woman of indominable spirit, sharp wit and intelligence, and maintained those qualities right up to the end of her life.
In addition to her husband, Joseph E. Doherty, who passed away in 1968, Mrs. Doherty was predeceased by her sisters, Mary Murphy, Anna Flaherty, Della Flaherty, and Kathryn Courtney.
She is survived by her son, Joseph E. Doherty, Jr. and his wife Jeanne of New Hampshire, her grandchildren, Michael A. Doherty and Karen (Doherty) Beaulieu, and four great-grandchildren.
Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a Funeral Service at the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Saturday, April 15th at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn.
