Toomey – in Woburn, formerly of Charlestown, March 2nd, Ruth E. (McAuliffe), beloved wife of the late James F. Toomey. Devoted mother of Anna Mae Tait of Somerville, Claire A. Breeden and her husband James of Woburn, Ruth P. Murphy and her husband Thomas of Charlestown and the late John J., Richard and James Toomey. Loving sister of the late Gertrude, Helen and Rita. Cherished grandmother of seventeen grandchildren, thirty-four great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren and two late grandchildren. Also survived by many dear nieces and nephews. A Funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Monday, March 6th, at 10:30 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Joseph’s Church, 100 Washington Street, Woburn at 11:30. Calling hours will be held on Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m. Interment in Holy Cross Cemetery, Malden. Donations may be made in Mrs. Toomey’s memory to a charity of one’s choice.

OBITUARY:

Ruth E. (McAuliffe) Toomey of Woburn, formerly of Charlestown, passed away quietly on Thursday, March 2nd, at the Aberjona Nursing Center in Winchester. The beloved wife of the late James F. Toomey, she was ninety-six years of age. Born in Boston, Ruth was raised in Charlestown where she lived most of her life. She was married at a young to her husband James, to whom she was devoted for thirty-two years before his death in 1961. In the early years of their marriage they had the opportunity to travel to Europe. After starting their family Ruth, a talented seamstress, choose to remain at home to care for her husband and their children. She made all of her children’s clothing as well as her daughters wedding gowns. In addition to sewing, Ruth enjoyed crocheting and loved to read, especially the daily newspaper. After her children were grown she used her talents as a seamstress to acquire work as a stitcher, a job she performed for some thirty years. As her family flourished with the arrival of grandchildren and great grandchildren, Ruth, who was the true matriarch of the family, gathered the family together annually. Every Christmas, she rented a hall and invited the entire family to celebrate the holiday. Each year on June 17th, she would organize the annual family outing in Charlestown. Ruth was always a very independent woman with a pleasant disposition. She was also a devout Catholic and attended Mass regularly until her health prohibited her from doing so. After her husband’s death, Ruth relocated to Woburn where she resided with her daughter.

In addition to her husband James F. Toomey, Ruth was predeceased by her sons, John J., Richard and James Toomey, her sisters Gertrude, Helen and Rita and two grandchildren.

She is survived by her daughters Anna Mae Tait of Somerville, Claire A. Breeden and her husband James of Woburn, Ruth P. Murphy and her husband Thomas of Charlestown, seventeen grandchildren, thirty-four great grandchildren and two great great grandchildren. Also survived by many dear nieces and nephews. A Funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Monday morning, March 6th, followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Joseph’s Church, 100 Washington Street, Woburn.
