WILLIAM L. “SPECS” DOHERTY – in Somerville, formerly of Woburn, December 13th. Son of the late James and Mary Ellen (Kelly) Doherty. Dear brother of Philip Doherty of Woburn, Charles Doherty of Somerville, and the late Neil, Joseph, James, and Danny Doherty. Also survived by many nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews. Funeral from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Saturday, December 17th, at 8:15 a.m. Funeral mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn, at 9. Calling hours Friday 4 to 8 p.m. Interment in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn. Donations may be made in Mr. Doherty’s memory to St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn, MA 01801.

OBITUARY:

William L. Doherty, a native of Woburn and resident of Somerville for over sixty years, passed away in Mt. Auburn Hospital in Cambridge on Tuesday, December 13th. Known as “Specs” to his friends and family, he was ninety-one years of age.

Born in Boston, he was the son of the late James and Mary Ellen (Kelly) Doherty. He grew up in the Hammond Square section of Woburn and attended Woburn schools.

A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army, stationed in the European Theater of Operations.

For over forty years, Mr. Doherty worked for General Electric in Lynn.

He was a member of the Irish-American Club in Somerville. He followed all types of sports, boxing in particular. He had a great relationship with his many nieces and nephews as well as his six brothers.

Preceding him in death were four brothers, Neil, Joseph, James, and Danny Doherty.

Surviving are two brothers, Philip Doherty of Woburn and Charles Doherty of Somerville, and many nieces, nephews, and grandnieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Saturday, December 17th, at 8:15 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn, at 9. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.
