Loving grandmother of Jonathan, Jennifer, Heather, Joseph and Sara and great-granddaughter Sophia Mingo. A Memorial Service will be held at the St. Martin Lutheran Church, 322 Old Falls Blvd, North Tonawanda, NY on Friday, December 30th, at 11 a.m. Relatives and friends are invited to attend. Gertrude F. (Ewald) Prohaska of Woburn,formerly N. Tonawanda, NY,passed away peacefully at the Sawtelle Hospice House in Reading on Thursday evening, November 17th, with her children and grandchildren by her bedside. The beloved wife of the late Joseph J. Prohaska, she was eighty-one years of age.
Born in N. Tonawanda, NY, Gertrude was the daughter of the late Martin and Anna (Belling) Ewald. Educated in New York, Gertrude was a graduate of N. Tonawanda High School. She continued her education at Bryant and Stratton Business Institute in Boston where she earned an Associates Degree in Business.
Following graduation, she began her employment as an accountant at Pierce Automotive and then went on to work for U.S. Steel Company. In 1948 she married Joseph J. Prohaska and they remained in N. Tonawanda, where together they raised their two sons. Gertrude took leave from the working world while her boys were young. She was most attentive to their needs and attended their academic and sporting events whenever possible. During the summer months, the family traveled to different vacation spots such as the lakes region in New Hampshire and New York and to her favorite destination, Gloucester, Massachusetts.
After her boys were grown, Gertrude and her husband returned to Gloucester often.
Gertrude also returned to work as an accountant for Theils Fuel Company where she work for twenty years until her retirement. Very active in her hometown church, St. Martin Lutheran Church, Gertrude was also a member of the choir. Gertrudes husband Joseph passed away in 2000, and a few years following his death she relocated to Woburn, Massachusetts where she lived with her son and his family.
In addition to her husband, Joseph J. Prohaska, Gertrude was predeceased by her sister Ada.
She is survived by her sons, Mark Prohaska and his wife Barbara of Woburn, David Prohaska and his wife Sandra Mac of Philadelphia, PA, her brother John E. Ewald of Reno, Nevada her grandchildren, Jonathan, Jennifer, Heather, Joseph and Sara and her great-granddaughter Sophia Mingo.

Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn.
