Shannon and his wife Virginia, all of Woburn and Elaine C. Mordenti and her husband Robert of NC. Dear brother of Warren H. Shannon and his wife Alice of Woburn. Loving grandfather of seven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Family and friends are kindly invited to attend a Funeral Service in the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Tuesday, August 2nd at 10 a.m. Calling hours Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.

OBITUARY:

Walter J. Shannon, a lifelong resident and longtime business owner in Woburn, passed away at the Winchester Hospital on Friday, July 29th after a brief illness. The beloved husband of Helen E. (Carlson), he was eighty-six years of age. Born in Woburn, Walter was the son of the late James and Florence (Switzer) Shannon. Walter was educated in the Woburn Public Schools and was a graduate of Woburn High School, Class of ’37. He continued his education at Boston University where he attended night classes while working on the farm during the day. In 1946, Mr. Shannon married his wife Helen and they remained on the farm where they raised their three children. Walter’s life revolved around his family and their business, Shannon Farms, which was located on the West Side and was started by his grandfather. Along with his brother Warren and their cousin, they ran the day-to-day operations and he worked every day from sunup to sundown. As his children grew older, they too became more involved in the business which has continue to expand. Throughout his years in business, Walter had the opportunity to meet with many interesting people and made it a point to greet as many of them as possible. He was a member of the New England Flower Growers Association and the Vice President of the New England Vegetable Growers Association, which is the oldest agricultural association in the Unites States. On the few occasions that he and his wife traveled they enjoyed cruises to locations such as Alaska, the Carribean, the Panama Canal and Bermuda.

Walter is survived by his wife, Helen E. (Carlson), to whom he was married for fifty-nine years this past March, his children, Sandra H. Schmitt and her husband Ronald, Walter J. Jr., “Jim??? Shannon and his wife Virginia, all of Woburn and Elaine C. Mordenti and her husband Robert of NC, his brother Warren H. Shannon and his wife Alice of Woburn, seven loving grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Family and friends are kindly invited to attend a Funeral Service in the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Tuesday, August 2nd at 10 a.m., officiated by Minister William Krawczyk. Calling hours Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.
