Rita M. (OBrien) Shaughnessy, wife of the late Thomas A. Shaughnessy, passed away Wednesday, November 12th, following a lengthy illness.
Mrs. Shaughnessy, a longtime resident of Scott Street, was at home surrounded by her family at the time of her passing. The beloved daughter of John and Catherine (Gillespie) OBrien, she was a lifelong resident of the Hammond Square section of Woburn.
She was a graduate of the Woburn High School Class of 1940, and worked 37 years as a keypunch operator for the Boston and Maine Railroad. During her retirement, Mrs. Shaughnessy enjoyed afternoon lunches with friends and caring for her family, particularly her grandchildren. She was also a lifelong and faithful communicant of St. Charles Parish.
In addition to her husband, Mrs. Shaughnessy was preceded in death by her daughter, Maura Shaughnessy Drawbaugh of Tallahassee, Florida. She was also preceded in death by brothers, Dan OBrien, Freddie OBrien, and sisters, Margaret Gillespie and Helen OBrien.
Mrs. Shaughnessy is survived by her son, Patrick W. Shaughnessy of Woburn; daughter, Catherine Midge??? Shaughnessy of Woburn; grandchildren, Patrick W. Shaughnessy Jr. and Matthew D. Shaughnessy, both of Woburn, and Thomas E. Drawbaugh of Tallahassee, Fla.; brother, Pete OBrien of Woburn; sister, Kay Hogan and her husband, Fran, of Woburn; sister-in-law and dear friend Betty Shaughnessy of Lexington, brothers-in-law Henry Shaughnessy and John Shaughnessy, of Woburn, as well as many nieces and nephews.
The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Saturday, November 15th, at 8:15 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn, at 9. Interment will follow in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.
Calling hours at the funeral home are Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.
