FRANCES A. (HUBBARD) SWEENEY – in Woburn, May 2nd, age 99, beloved wife of the late William J. Sweeney. Devoted mother of William J. Sweeney, Jr. of Medford and Paul F. Sweeney and his wife Joyce of Woburn. Sister of the late Lester, Leo, Wallace, Alvin, Edward, Arthur, Frank, Albert, and Loretta Hubbard, Jeanette Shaughnessy, and Dorothy O’Brien. Loving grandmother of Alan, William and Mark Sweeney and Jane LaVenture, and Paul and David Sweeney. Also survived by six great-grandchildren. Funeral from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Tuesday, May 6th, at 9:15 a.m. Funeral mass in St. Charles Church at 10. OBITUARY:

Frances A. Sweeney, a resident of Woburn for most of her life, passed away at the Blaire House in Tewksbury early Friday morning, May 2nd, at the age of 99. She was the wife of the late William J. Sweeney, who died in 1971.

Born in Hubbard’s Point in Yarmouth, Nova Scotia, on September 11, 1903, she was one of twelve children of the late Simon and Emily “Millie” (LeBlanc) Hubbard. She was educated in Canadian schools and came alone to live with her Aunt Eleanor and Uncle Albert when she was just sixteen, working as an au pair.

By 1922, Frances’ parents and all her brothers and sisters had moved to Woburn and Winchester. She resided with her family on Stoddard Street and later, John Street in Woburn’s South End. She married her late husband William in 1930. Frances and Bill enjoyed dancing throughout their lives. They were devout communicants at St. Charles Church.

Frances returned to her birthplace in Nova Scotia several times throughout the years, most recently in 1993 at the age of 89.

In addition to her husband Bill, she was preceded in death by her brothers ans sisters: Lester, Leo, Wallace, Alvin, Edward, Arthur, Frank, Albert, and Loretta Hubbard, Jeanette Shaughnessy, and Dorothy O’Brien.

Surviving are two sons, William J. Sweeney, Jr. of Medford and Paul F. Sweeney and his wife Joyce of Woburn, her grandchildren, Alan, William and Mark Sweeney and Jane LaVenture, and Paul and David Sweeney. Also surviving are six great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Tuesday, May 6th, at 9:15 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in St. Charles Church at 10.

Calling hours at the funeral home are on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment will be in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.
