OBITUARY:

Richard E. Finn, 85, died on Saturday, December 28th, at Southern Maine Medical Center in Biddeford, Maine, following a brief illness.

Son of the late Richard E. and Mary Isabel (Sheehan) Finn, he was a graduate of Boston English High School with the Class of 1935. He had been a resident of Woburn for many years before moving last year to Kennebunk, Maine. A communicant of St. Anthony Church, he and his wife Florence had many friends and acquaintances in that section of the city.

Upon his retirement as Director of Personnel from the Boston Naval Shipyard in 1968, he took up a second career with the Charette Company in Woburn. He retired from there in 1990.

Dick was an avid sports enthusiast, especially when it came to games in which his seven grandchildren were playing. “Papa??? could always be found in the stands or bleachers of basketball, football, soccer, tennis, baseball and field hockey games – cheering for all his home teams (Woburn, Wakefield and Melrose). On many occasions he would sit through three consecutive games – beginning with a girls JV basketball team coached by his son, followed by two other basketball games of the grandchildren. As recently as one month ago Dick was watching a Tufts University football game – with a special cheer for the quarterback, his grandson.

He leaves his beloved wife of sixty-one years, Florence A. (Downes) Finn. He was the devoted father of sons Richard J. Finn of Kennebunk, Joseph W. Finn and his wife Ann Marie of Melrose, and daughters Mary A. Sullivan and her husband William of Woburn and Kathleen V. Treacy and her husband William of Wakefield.

His legacy is his seven grandchildren – Joseph Finn, Stephen, Colleen and Brian Sullivan, Scott, Kerry and Kimberly Treacy. He is further survived by his sister Geraldine Minichiello and her husband Charles of Sharon, and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Tuesday, December 31st, at 9:15 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in St. Anthony Church, 851 Main Street, Woburn, at 10. Interment will follow in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.

Relatives and friends may call at the funeral home on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Dick’s memory to the Woburn High School Scholarship Fund, PO Box 202, Woburn, MA 01801.
