OBITUARY:

Joseph T. Crowley, a lifelong resident of Woburn, passed away on Wednesday, September 11th, at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston following a brief illness. The husband of Alice (Blake) Crowley, with whom he recently celebrated their sixty-fourth wedding anniversary, he was ninety years of age.

The son of the late Timothy and Julia (Ruane) Crowley, he attended St. Charles Elementary School and graduated from Woburn High School with the Class of 1929. He continued his education at Bentley College, completing his degree in 1934.

Mr. Crowley went to work at New England Telephone and Telegraph Company at the age of sixteen, upon the death of his father, and never left, working his way up the ladder from delivery boy to become Assistant Secretary of the entire corporation, which at that time was the region’s only major telephone company. He retired in 1975 after forty-eight consecutive years with the telephone company. He also served on the Board of Directors of several smaller regional telephone companies.

In his younger days, Mr. Crowley was an avid bowler, participating in the Midweek League at the Towanda Club.

A devoted parishioner of St. Charles Church, he was a past officer of the Holy Name Society and was a longtime member of Council 77 Knights of Columbus.

Mr. Crowley and his wife Alice took up square dancing in the 1950’s and attended numerous dance conventions and exhibitions throughout the area, often traveling to other areas of the country to participate in square- and round-dancing events.

He was involved in numerous charitable works, including composition of Braille Text for the Blind, and often reading to sightless patients.

A devoted family man, Mr. Crowley cherished the time spent with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four sisters, Sr. Louise of the Angels, SND, Mary Gill, Alice Kennedy, and Anne Keating.

In addition to his wife Alice, he is survived by four children, Joseph T., Jr. and his wife Audrey, David B. and his wife Mary, Janice J. Wright and her husband Thomas, and Elaine F. Bradley and her husband Daniel, all of Woburn; and a brother, John Crowley of Woburn.

He was also the beloved grandfather of ten grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Saturday, September 14th, at 9:15 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn, at 10. Interment will be in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m.

Donations may be made in Joe’s memory to St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn, MA 01801.
