OBITUARY:

Concetta “Connie??? LaPorta of Woburn passed away early this morning at Winchester Hospital after having been stricken just a few days ago. She was the wife of the late Charles R. LaPorta, who died in 1979. In her ninety-seventh year, she was still working as a chocolate dipper for Russo’s Candies up to the time of her death.

Born in Boston September 14th, 1905, she was the daughter of the late Matteo and Chiara (Luisi) Guardabasso. She resided in Medford for many years and moved to Woburn twenty-three years ago.

Since the time she finished school, Connie worked in the candy industry. She was a hand-dipper of chocolates at Schrafft’s Candies for 35 years, and later for Bailey’s Ice Cream in Boston and Russo’s Candies in Saugus. She enjoyed her work and was very much in demand, since she could hand-dip chocolates faster than any of the machines.

Devoted to her family, she enjoyed knitting and crocheting for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Each of them received her lovingly made items as a hug from “Noona,??? as she was affectionately known.

In addition to her husband Charles, she was preceded in death by her son, Joseph LaPorta, a brother, Joseph Basso, and a sister, Etta Mustone.

Surviving are her daughter, Ann M. Lupone and her husband John of Woburn, her daughter-in-law, Phyllis LaPorta of Illinois, a sister, Nancy Beston of Waltham, seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Monday, March 11th, at 9:15 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in St. Joseph’s Church, 100 Washington Street, Woburn, at 10. Interment will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery, Medford.

Calling hours at the funeral home are Sunday from 3 to 7 p.m.

Donations may be made in Connie’s memory to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Box 318, Memphis, TN 38101.
