Mello – in Woburn, April 12th, 2001, Alfred F., beloved husband of Maureen A. (Hankin) Mello. Devoted father of Sheila Distaso and her husband Nicholas of Nashua, NH, and Richard F. Mello and his wife Donna of Pelham, NH. Brother of Elvita Mello of Cambridge, Edward of S. Hadley, Frank of Pembroke, Raymond of Burlington, Theresa Ring of Seekonk, and the late Mary Hite. Cherished grandfather of Daniel Distaso and his wife Teri, Mark Distaso, Lisa Lane and her husband Jason, and Christina Mello. Also survived by a great-grandson, Trevor Distaso. Funeral from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Tuesday, April 17th, at 10:15 a.m. Funeral mass in St. Barbara’s Church at 11. OBITUARY:

Alfred F. Mello of Woburn passed away here Thursday morning, April 12th, following a brief illness. The husband of Maureen A. (Hankin) Mello for nearly fifty-six years, he was eighty-seven years of age.

Mr. Mello was born and raised in Cambridge, the son of the late Manuel and Mary (Ferriera) Mello. He was a graduate of Cambridge High and Latin.

A veteran of World War II, he served with the U.S. Army. amd was honorably discharged as a Corporal, after having received a Bronze Star.

For the past fifty years, he had made his home with his family on Woburn’s West Side.

He worked for over thirty-three years as a clerk in the Veterans Administration offices in Boston. A quiet man by nature, he was devoted to his family and was a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was also a faithful communicant of St. Barbara’s Church.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mary Hite of Virginia.

Surviving in addition to his wife Maureen are a daughter, Sheila Distaso and her husband Nicholas of Nashua, NH; a son, Richard F. Mello and his wife Donna of Pelham, NH; two sisters, Elvita Mello of Cambridge and Theresa Ring of Seekonk; three brothers, Edward Mello of S. Hadley, Frank Mello of Pembroke, and Raymond Mello of Burlington; four grandchildren: Daniel Distaso and his wife Teri, Mark Distaso, Lisa Lane and her husband Jason, and Christina Mello; and a great-grandson, Trevor Distaso.

The funeral will be held from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, on Tuesday, April 17th, at 10:15 a.m., followed by a funeral mass in St. Barbara’s Church, 138 Cambridge St., Woburn, at 11. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn.

Calling hours at the funeral home will be on Monday from 4 to 8 p.m.
