OBITUARY
John Burgio, Sr. of Woburn, passed away at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington on Thursday, July 27th. The beloved husband of the late Grace (Molica) Burgio, he was ninety years of age.
Named John because he was born on John the Baptists birthday, he was born in Everett and raised in South Boston where he attended public school. John was one of five siblings born to the late Benigno and Maria (Campanello) Burgio.
While John was living in South Boston, he met his future wife Grace Molica when he was just twelve years old. Beginning in the 1940s, John began his lifelong hobby of photography. In 1945, John enlisted in the United States Navy where he proudly served as a Seaman in the Pacific in the Seabees. After returning to the States, John and Grace were married in the Gate of Heaven Church in South Boston. They started their family in Dorchester, then moved to Woburn where they spent the rest of their lives, raising seven children together proudly. They were together for 60 years until Graces death.
John always loved spending time with Grace and their children. In 1964, he, Grace and four kids traveled to and from the Worlds Fair in New York in one day!
John traveled to places such as Italy, Alaska, Hawaii, the Grand Canyon, and Disney World. But his favorite places to visit were Las Vegas and Foxwoods.
Cook outs during Labor Day, Memorial Day and July 4th were a yearly tradition at Johns house.
Every Sunday, the family would get together and have huge Italian dinners, where John did the cooking. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren loved spending time with their Papa and he adored them all. He loved telling stories and singing Italian songs.
A very religious man at heart, John was a member of St. Barbaras Church in Woburn since its inception in 1955 and a member of the Knights of Columbus.
John will always be remembered for his great sense of humor, his love for the Red Sox and his love for Western movies.
Sadly, in addition to his parents, John was predeceased by his wife Grace, and his brother Salvatore Burgio.
John is lovingly survived by his children John Burgio Jr., his wife Bernadette, Joel Burgio, Joyce Burgio, Jacqueline Burgio, Justine Burgio, Jule O’Donnell, her late husband Dennis all of Woburn, and Jan Hastie, her husband James of Cambridge. Dear brother of Rosario Burgio, his wife Barbara of Peabody, Benjamin Burgio, his wife Christine of FL, Marie DeMellia, her late husband Michael of NH and the late Salvatore Burgio, his late wife Marie. Loving grandfather to Maurya Buckley, her husband Matthew, John Burgio III, his wife Shannon, James Hastie, Edward Hastie, his wife Adriana, and Michael ODonnell and three great-grandchildren.
A Funeral will be held from the Lynch Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn, Wednesday, August 2nd, 9 a.m. followed by a Celebration of Life Funeral Mass in St. Barbara’s Church, 138 Cambridge Road, Woburn at 10 a.m. Interment in Calvary Cemetery, Woburn.
