OBITUARY:

Raymond C. Spinazola passed away Wednesday, March 5th with his beloved family at his side. The dear husband of the late L. Frances (Kirkland) Spinzazola, he was ninety-four years of age.

Born in Woburn, he was one of ten children of the late Carmino and Susan (Ciampa) Spinazola. Raised in the Hammond Square section of the city, Ray graduated from Woburn High School with the Class of 1937. Following high school he became very involved in heavy equipment operations.

In 1941, he married the love of his life, L. Frances Kirkland, to whom he was devoted to for over forty years. They made their home not too far away from where he grew up, the Library Field section of the city. There he has remained for over the next seventy years. Often times when the children were growing up there were many “Sunday rides” checking out the different gravel pits throughout the state or following up on new pieces of equipment. Many happy summer months were spent in Henneker, NH. It was always the place to go during the summer months. Family and friends had the opportunity to enjoy each others company while surrounded by the beautiful mountains, pristine lakes and all the adventures of the outdoors.

Ray wore many hats throughout the years serving his hometown community. He was appointed to the Board of Health and his role was to supervise the cities landfills and the operation of rubbish pick up. In the late 1960s he was appointed Constable for the City of Woburn. This position he had worked diligently at for over the next fifty years, retiring just late last year. Throughout the years he had also served as a Bail Bondsman for the court system, a Notary and Justice of the Peace. Just recently Ray was reappointed to another term by Governor Patrick.

He had also served as a Director of the Massachusetts Constable Association and Massachusetts Rifle Association. Ray was also a member of the Italian Police Officers Association, Woburn Historical Society, and the West Side McDonald’s Coffee Club.

Ray throughout his lifetime was always actively involved in Woburn and also throughout the state. He had a host of friends and was always upbeat, cheerful and always willing to help.

Ray had great love for his family and was always there for each of his children and their families. He had remained quite active right up until the last several months. A very proud citizen of Woburn, he served his family and his community well over the last seventy-five years.

In addition to his wife, L. Frances (Kirkland) Spinazola, he was predeceased by his siblings, Clem, Patrick, Lukie, Margaret, and Julia Spinazola, Teneta Zanello, and Nellie Caruso, and his brother-in-law, Joseph Busa.

He is lovingly survived by his children, Roberta L. Spinazola-Larmont and her husband Jay of WA, Carole S. Mills and her husband Ret. Capt., WFD, Robert B. of Woburn, Rae Ellen Hess of NH, and Raymond C. Spinazola, Jr. of Wilmington, his brother, Victor Spinazola and his wife Pat, his sister, Alice Busa, all of Woburn, his grandchildren, Phillip, Kara, Eric, Tina, Robin, Robert, Stephen, Frances, and Uriha, many great-grandchildren, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend a Funeral Service at the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Saturday, March 8th at 12 Noon. Calling hours will be held on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. Interment in Woodbrook Cemetery, Woburn. Remembrances may be made in Mr. Spinazola’s memory to the Woburn Historical Society, 7 Mishawum Road, Woburn, MA 01801.

Words cannot express how sorry Jeff and I are about your Dad’s passing. He was truly one of a kind. I have many fond memories of him through the years – his storytelling was legendary at all family events and provided us hours of laughter. The one thing that does stand out is how quick he was to always lend a hand. As I look back through many important moments in my life, your dad was always there – from teaching me to drive to helping me land my first job. He will be greatly missed!
