OBITUARY:

James J. “Jimmy Joe” Doherty Jr., passed away unexpectedly, Friday, April twenty sixth, at Winchester Hospital. The beloved husband of Paula A. (McManus) Doherty, he was seventy-one years of age.

Born in Woburn, he was one of four children born to the late James J. and Esther (Duffy) Doherty. Raised in the South end of Woburn he attended St. Charles Elementary School and was a graduate of Keith Academy in Lowell.

Following high school he began working as a draftsman and later owned his own electronics manufacturing company.

In 1963 he married his sweetheart Paula McManus, whom he had dated since they were juniors in high school. They made their home in Woburn where they have remained. They brought four terrific children into the world to whom they were devoted. He coached their youth basketball and football teams, and if he wasn’t coaching, he was there cheering them on. He rarely missed a game. As a grandfather, he was fiercely proud of the many academic, artistic and athletic accomplishments of his grandchildren, and again, he rarely missed an opportunity attend their events.

Jim loved the outdoors and especially, Pittsburg, NH. His children and some friends joined together and built “the camp” from the foundation on up. This was the place where many, many happy hours and days were spent in the sheer serenity of the mountains and Connecticut lakes. Fishing, hiking, reading and relaxing were all part of the enjoyment.

Jim was a voracious reader and crossword puzzle aficionado. He loved to dance with Paula, loved to sing, and had a profound appreciation of music. Amongst his favorites were Irish and Folk, but if his son Mike and friends were playing, it was the Blues.

His Irish heritage was a very strong part of his being. He was a founding member of the Irish American Club in Woburn.

A very easy going, kind, thoughtful man, Jim’s greatest love was his family. His wife, children, grandchildren, sister, brothers and in-laws all shared a very special relationship and always there was a place at the table for the many friends who would stop in. His door was always open and the coffee was always on.

Jim is lovingly survived by his wife of fifty years, Paula A. (McManus), his children, Kathleen Doherty Rebello and her husband Ret. Chief KPD, Joseph of Kingston, James J. Doherty, III and Mary Witham of Methuen, Michael C. Doherty and his wife Nancy, and Colleen M. Doherty and Shawn Doyle, all of Woburn, his siblings, Ret. Chief WFD, Robert E. Doherty and his wife Rita, Arthur F. Doherty and his wife Roberta, and Mary A. Potamis and her husband James, all of Woburn, his grandchildren, Michael and Devin Rebello, Peter and Jaclyn Surette, Danny Traficanti, Christa, Julianne, Laurie, Alison, Michael, Kevin, and Keira Doherty, and many loving nieces and nephews.

Funeral from the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Thursday, May 2nd at 9:15 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn at 10.
