Theresa E. (Doiron) Smith, a longtime resident of Woburn, passed away peacefully on September 19th at the age of 97. She was the beloved wife of the late Richard P. Smith and, above all else, a devoted mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend whose life was centered around family, helping others, and the simple joy of being together.

Theresa’s greatest accomplishment was the family she built and nurtured. The mother of eight children, she dedicated much of her life to creating a home where everyone was welcome and there was always room for one more. Her home became the gathering place for generations of family, filled with children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, conversation, laughter, and countless memories. Strong and determined, Theresa raised a large family with an unwavering devotion that remained at the heart of who she was throughout her life.

She got her driver’s license in her mid-40’s so she could use the 1 car to go food shopping on Fridays for the week. After raising her children and later becoming widowed, Theresa continued to challenge herself. She proudly earned her GED, an accomplishment that reflected the independence and determination she carried throughout her life.

Theresa also believed deeply in giving her time to others. For more than 30 years, she volunteered with the Social Concern Food Pantry, quietly helping families and individuals in need within her community. Her generosity extended far beyond Woburn. Theresa volunteered with Habitat for Humanity and even traveled to Mexico, where she helped build a home for a family in need. For Theresa, helping others was not something that required recognition; it was simply part of the way she lived.

When she wasn’t caring for others, Theresa found happiness in staying active and enjoying the people she loved. She loved to dance, especially line dancing with her daughters and sisters-in-law. Weekly breakfasts with her sisters-in-law became a treasured tradition. She enjoyed crocheting and passed the craft along to her daughters, leaving them with both a skill and wonderful memories of time spent together.

Theresa loved the outdoors and for nearly 40 years could often be found walking around Horn Pond, a routine that became a familiar and cherished part of her life. She was also an enthusiastic traveler. Her adventures took her throughout the United States and abroad to Iceland, Greenland, France, Germany, and beyond. Whether close to home or across the world, Theresa embraced life with curiosity, strength, and an appreciation for new experiences. She had a passion for reading and would go to any available library and take out 3-4 books at a time.

Through 97 years, Theresa created a legacy measured not by possessions, but by people. It lives on in her eight children, her 20 grandchildren and 25 great-grandchildren, in the families she helped through decades of volunteer work, and in the traditions and values she passed from one generation to the next. Her home was the gathering place, but Theresa herself was its heart.

Theresa is lovingly survived by her children, Diane M. Carbone and her husband Robert of Woburn, Brenda Rolli and her husband Doug of Florida, Barbara Beaudin of Woburn, Lee D’Arcangelo and her husband Paul of Maine, Mark Smith and his wife Michelle of Nevada, and Jeffrey Smith and his wife Jennifer of Virginia. She was predeceased by her children, David Smith and Karen Richards. She was the dear sister of Esther Richard of Vermont, Evelyn Chandler of Pennsylvania, Louise Prather of North Carolina, Laurette Favor of California, and the late Francis, Gerard and Edmond Doiron, Eva Thibault and Noella Beaulieu. She is also lovingly survived by many nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
