Evangeline (Lipa) Speros , a long-time resident of Woburn, passed away Monday, August 14th after a lingering illness. The beloved wife of Aristides C. Speros for sixty-two years, she was eighty-two years of age.
Born in Istanbul, she was the daughter of the late Philip and Celia (Manchi) Lipa. Evangeline was raised in a small village in Istanbul, during a time when there was much turmoil and unrest. At sixteen years of age Evangeline and her family fled the country and headed to America, settling in Jamaica Plain.
A very bright, intelligent woman, Evangeline was fluent in five different languages and attended Harvard University, where she learned to speak English. Her family was very active in the Greek Orthodox Church, in Boston. While attending a picnic there, she met the Speros’ family who introduced her to their son Aristides. Two years later they married, moved to Woburn, and dedicated themselves to raising their two fine sons.
Evangeline secured herself a position with the Federal Government, with the Department of Defense. Her area was dedicated to the Polaris Missiles, serving as the accountant.
After the children were grown, they moved to South Yarmouth, at the Cape, where they spent spring and summer, and when summer was over, then to their home in West Palm Beach, Florida. Throughout the years she and Aristides travelled all over the world and their “most favorite” place to visit was Greece, where they visited many, many times.
Evangeline loved her family dearly. They were first and foremost in her life, and their needs always were first. Often when she found the time Evangeline enjoyed reading a good book, in any genre! Throughout her lifetime, she was a very special person to many, always doing for family, friends and others she has met along her life’s journey.
Sadly in 2001 their hearts were broken with the sudden passing of their son, Artie. She is lovingly survived by her dear husband of sixty two years, Aristides, devoted son and daughter-in-law Philip and his wife Lisa, along with her cherished grandchildren Nicole and Michael Speros.
