Devoted mother of John McGrath, his wife Mary of Hudson, Joel McGrath, his wife Judy of AZ. Dear sister of the late Albert “Bebere” Esnault. Loving grandmother of Michael, James, Melanie and Kevin. OBITUARY

Simone B. (Esnault) McGrath , 99, a resident of Woburn, died peacefully, Thursday, February 8th,2018 at the Marlboro Hills Nursing Center in Marlboro, a month shy of her one-hundredth birthday. She was the beloved wife of the late Michael J. McGrath.

Born in Paris, France, Simone was a daughter of the late Albert and Emily Esnault. Simone was raised in Paris and a graduate of the Lycee. She was a tremendous athlete and runner and was once a champion of the 800 meter race in France. During the Liberation of Paris, which was a military action that took place during World War II, Simone met her future husband, Michael on a blind date. After falling in love, she immigrated with him to the United States where she has resided since 1946.

For many years, Simone worked as an electronics technician for Sylvania Electronics. While working there, she started a corporate Women’s Basketball league that still exists today.

Simone was never a woman who sat still. She remained active well into recent years and enjoyed taking walks and vacuuming her house. She was proud of her French heritage and enjoyed singing and speaking in French. She was lifetime member of the Woburn YMCA, having been going there for over 60 years and also volunteered for the Boston Marathon numerous times. For several years she represented the state of Massachusetts in the US Senior Olympics as a race walker, having won a few times.

Simone was the devoted mother of John McGrath, his wife Mary of Hudson, Joel McGrath, his wife Judy of AZ. Loving grandmother of Michael, James, Melanie and Kevin.

Sadly, in addition to her husband Michael and her parents Albert and Emily, she was predeceased by her brother Albert “Bebere” Esnault.
