Obituary

John F. “Jack” O’Doherty, Jr., passed away at the Lakes Region General Hospital on Monday, January 15th with his loving family by his side. The beloved husband to Cynthia M. (Wheaton) O’Doherty he was sixty-three years of age.

Born in Winchester and raised in Woburn, Jack was one of five siblings born to the late Theresa V. (Gill) O’Doherty. After graduating from Woburn Public Schools, he attended Northeastern University and Merrimack College earning a degree in Engineering. Following his Education Jack continued to what he considered one of his greatest achievements, the births of his four children, Krista, Kelley, Lori and Matthew. Throughout his life they were always the center of his world.

Many years later, Jack met the woman who would become the love of his life for the past 25 years. Cynthia & Jack were married in 2001 at Trinity Episcopal Church in Woburn and had such wonderful years together. They thoroughly enjoyed spending time between their homes in Woburn and in Belmont NH on Lake Winnisquam.

Jack was a man of many business talents. Being naturally successful in his Ventures he absorbed much knowledge and learnt everything he could ranging from engineering & mechanic work to entrepreneurship, Jack was very gifted and truly a “Jack of all Trades” He worked for many companies including Textron Systems before opening his first business, a fish market & Restaurant in Winnisquam, NH. Continuing to work alongside his family & friends he opened Rent-A-Tent in Woburn, which he owned for over twenty-seven years, and loved every minute he got to spend with them.

Jack’s hobbies included fishing, ice fishing, skiing and all things outdoors. He was an avid Patriots & NASCAR fan, and enjoyed bartending from time to time and loved to socialize. Cookouts and Holidays were big events for Jack and his family. He was known for being a phenomenal chef and Thanksgiving Dinner was his specialty and like fine wine got better every year.

Jack was very involved in both the communities of Woburn and Belmont with his Rent-A-Tent business. He was known as “The Tent Guy” and was always seen setting up tents of all sizes at Flag Day in Woburn and Mallard’s Landing in Belmont, New Hampshire. Wherever Jack traveled, it seemed the people he knew traveled with him. He saw people he knew here there and everywhere! In addition, Jack was a member of the Laconia Elks Club in New Hampshire, the Knights of Columbus in Wilmington and the Ski Patrol for Horn Pond in Woburn from days gone by.

Jack will always be remembered for having the biggest heart in the world and had a wonderful sense of humor. He was the type of person who would do anything for anyone. A proud father to his children and father figure to his niece and nephews. Jack taught many important values to them that they’ve kept to this day.

Sadly, in addition to his mother Theresa, Jack was pre-deceased by his brother Gerard O’Doherty.
