OBITUARY

James M. "Jim" Flaherty passed away at the Winchester Hospital on Sunday, December 31st. The beloved husband of Therese M. (O’Brien) Flaherty, he was 89 years of age.

Born in Boston, he was the son of the late Thomas and Mary (Berry) Flaherty. One of nine children, he was raised and educated in the Dorchester section of Boston. As a graduate of Boston Latin High School, Jim enlisted in the United States Navy and proudly served during World War II. In the early 1950s he started a decades long career with Polaroid. It was there that he met Therese O’Brien and his world lit up! They soon married, and their love was destined to last for over sixty years. Together they brought four beautiful children into the world and Jim truly dedicated himself to being the best husband, father and, later, grandfather in the world.

A gentle man of few words, Jim still had strong character and convictions. He so enjoyed telling stories to his family, including many a tall tale! In later years, he enjoyed watching the antics of his grandchildren at family gatherings.

Cape Cod in the summer was his favorite spot while his children were growing up. During vacation times he enjoyed sitting in the sun with his newspaper in hand, keeping up with all the happenings in current events, a habit he continued throughout his life. Jim could always be relied upon to know both the local and national news.

Football and boxing were his favorite sports, which he followed very closely over the years.

Throughout the years, Jim was also a member of Kiwanis International and the Knights of Columbus.

Sadly, Jim was predeceased by his parents and all of his siblings Matthias, John, Thomas, Mary, Margaret, Teresa, Barbara and Catherine.

He is lovingly survived by his dear wife Therese, along with his beloved children Karen Flaherty of Woburn, Kevin Flaherty, his wife Christie of DE., Mary Beth Flaherty of Woburn, Kenneth Flaherty, and his wife Clare of Medford. Cherished grandfather of Patrick, Coady, Ryan, Mia, Tess, Declan, and Niall. James is also survived by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be held in St. Charles Church, 280 Main Street, Woburn, Saturday, January 6th at 12 noon. Interment in Oak Grove Cemetery at a later date.
