OBITUARY

John William Sutherland, 68, Retired Woburn Fire Department Lieutenant and part-time resident of Kittery, ME, 68, died peacefully, October 22, 2017, at Hyder House Hospice in Dover, NH, with his loving family by his side.

Born in Boston, John was the son of the late George and Cecilia (Brennan) Getty. He was raised and educated in Woburn and a graduate of Woburn High School.

John served his country proudly as part of the US Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, until being honorably discharged.

For more than 35 years, John dedicated his life to the City of Woburn as part of the Fire Department, retiring as Lieutenant. Being a Fire Fighter was a career John was extremely proud of and he looked forward to mentoring new recruits.

John was an avid and talented golfer and even collected and sold golf balls. He was a member of the Woburn Country Club, Cocheco Country Club in New Hampshire and Long Meadow Golf Club in Lowell. John had a colorful and vibrant personality and style, and won best dressed Golfer one year at Woburn Country Club, as well as earning himself several hole-in-ones, of which he was extremely proud.

John was an exceptionally supportive father and grandfather. He started his life with nothing and worked hard so that he could set his family up to succeed, a wish that was accomplished. He had a gruff exterior but was extremely loving, forgiving and patient, and will be truly missed by all those who had the pleasure of knowing him.

John is survived and will be deeply missed by his life partner, Sandra Wing of Kittery, ME; his two children, Sean Sutherland and wife Jeanne of NC, Laurie Istwany and husband Basil of VA; step-daughter, Tracy Wing Hornig and husband Timothy of PA; six cherished grandchildren, Baxter, Quinten, Troy, Cadence, Gabrielle and Justin; great-grandson Jude; two brothers Joseph Sutherland and wife Theresa of Marlboro, MA and George Getty and wife Anna of Stoneham, as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins, colleagues, friends and his beloved cats, Riley, Tessa and the late Sapphire.

The family would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to all of the nurses and staff at the Hyder Hospice House, for all the love, compassion and care they shown to John and his family during his time there.
