OBITUARY:

John A. Melaragni passed away at the Winchester Hospital Saturday, June 3th with his loving family at his side. The beloved husband of the late June E. (Bennett) Melaragni and the late Mary Rose (Albert) Melaragni, John was 90 years of age.

Born and raised in the south end of Woburn, John was one of eight children born to the late Antonio and Benedetta (Mele) Melaragni, both of Italy. He attended Woburn public schools and while in high school, he left and enlisted in the United States Navy at the age of sixteen. A seaman during World War II John served in the Pacific Theatre. Following his service to our country John returned home went back to high school and received his diploma, graduating with the Class of ‘48. John went on for several years attending Northeastern University, focusing on engineering courses.

In 1949, John married Mary Rose Albert whom he grew up with in the south end of Woburn. They made their home together in Winchester, where they brought up their three children. Around the same time, John began his career with Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN) Technologies as an electrical engineer that would last for over forty years, retiring in 1998. John and Mary had many adventures together as a family and were able to do some travelling together themselves before Mary passed away in the early seventies.

After Mary’s death John at the time was working for the Dept. of the Navy, in the underwater weights and measurements division and was in Hawaii. While in Hawaii, John was introduced to June E. Bennett from Dorchester who was vacationing with her family. They continued their courtship back in Winchester and in the late 70’s were married and made their home in Winchester. June and John thoroughly enjoyed travelling and playing golf. They retired at the same time in the late 90’s and they devoted themselves to travelling every place they hadn’t been and playing rounds of golf at least five days a week at different clubs! Europe, Italy, Germany, Austria, Austraila and the Netherlands, along with return trips to all the different islands in Hawaii, filled their years with many happy times and fabulous memories!

A family man at heart, John enjoyed spending time with his family; which included not only his children, but his five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren whom they all called “Papa.” Summers at Hampton Beach were a yearly tradition as well as Newfound and Beaver Lakes where they would vacation growing up. Holidays were full with lots of people, lots of gifts, lots of fun along with many cherished memories.

John will always be remembered for his fun personality and his great sense of humor. Everyone who knew John, remembered him for his laid back presence and his real true gift for conversation! A great storyteller, John was a very knowledgable gentleman and just had a wonderful way of sharing his stories.

A very happy, healthy and active man, he was very intent on keeping himself physically fit throughout his life. He enjoyed walking and often was seen walking Horn Pond over the years, right up until last summer.

Sadly, in addition to his wives June and Mary, his parents Antonio and Benedetta, his siblings Joseph, Frank, Dominic, Albert and Sr. Mary Melaragni all predeceased John.

John is lovingly survived by his daughter MaryBeth Doucette, her husband Daniel of Winchester, John A. Melaragni, his wife Patricia of NH, and William Melaragni, his partner Jeffry Pike of Arlington. Devoted brother of Violet "Vi" Urciuolo of Woburn, Ben Melaragni, his wife Margaret of Woburn. Cherished "Papa" of Melissa Jess, her husband Scott, Stefanie and Matthew Moriarty, Krissy, John E., and Robert W. Melaragni. A Funeral will be held from the Lynch Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn on Wednesday, June 7th at 9 a.m. followed by a Funeral Mass in St. Charles Church, 280 Main St, Woburn at 10 a.m. Family and friends are respectfully invited to call at the Funeral Home, Tuesday, June 6th, 3-7 p.m. Interment in Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester.
