OBITUARY:

Marguerita M. “Margo” (Leahy) Matthews, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on Monday, April 24th, at the Sawtelle Hospice House in Reading. The wife of the late Eugene F. “Geno” Matthews, she was 92 years of age.

Born in Boston, Margo was one of four siblings born to the late William and Margaret (Doherty) Leahy. Raised in Somerville, she attended Somerville Public Schools where she graduated from with the Class of 1942.

While visiting friends in Boston, Margo met her future husband “Geno” through his sister. Well, all it took was an introduction and it was love at first site! In 1952 they married and moved to Woburn in the mid-fifties.

As a mother, wife and homemaker, Margo enjoyed it all. Bringing up their three wonderful children kept her very busy from morning right on through the rest of the day and night. The simple things in life, were Margo’s favorite. Family trips to Hampton Beach and White Horse Beach, at the Cape along with Winnisquam Lake, were always the go to places for vacations. One of her favorite hobbies was decorating her home for all the major holidays. No matter Easter, Thanksgiving, Fourth of July or Christmas you were always in the moment of that particular holiday. Her cooking was incredibly delicious and always enjoyed cooking up a storm and inviting the family over to enjoy.

Being a very creative woman Margo hand sewed seasonal and holiday flags, hanging them proudly outside her front door in celebration of a holiday, season or event.

While out and about during the day, she would often stop by Massotta’s Variety store in the center and tried out her “Irish luck.”

A very kind, funny, personable and determined woman, Margo was a woman of great faith and a very active member of St. Barbara’s Parish for over 50 years. An active participant of the “Young at Hearts” group at St. Barbara’s, she enjoyed many different trips with the group and shared many special friendships.

Margo was sadly predeceased by her parents, husband Geno and siblings, Francis and William Leahy.

She is lovingly survived by her children, William Matthews of Bedford, Jeanne Matthews of Woburn, Monica Matthews of FL. Dear sister of Mary Warner of Somerville. Devoted Nana of David and Kika Matthews of Woburn, Sean and Elyssa Matthews of Maine, Alison and David Kee of Woburn, Jamie Matthews of Woburn along with seven wonderful great grandchildren.
