Obituary of Norbert J. Kelly
World War II Veteran
NORBERT J. KELLY- in South Chatham, formerly of Woburn, Monday,January 23rd at ninety-five years of age. Beloved husband of the late Patricia (Hogan) Kelly. Cherished father of Kevin P. Kelly of NH, Mark H. Kelly of GA and the late Norbert Kelly, Jr. Dear brother of Winifred T. Kelly of NH and the late John F. Kelly. Also lovingly survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A Graveside service will be held at Woodbrook Cemetery, 100 Salem Street Woburn, Saturday, January 28th at 12 p.m. Please, in lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in honor of Norbert to the Marine Corps Heritage Foundation, 3800 Fettler Park Drive, Suite #104, Dumfries, VA 22025. Arrangements are under the direction of Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main Street, Woburn.
Norbert J. Kelly passed away at his home in South Chatham amongst his beloved family, Monday, January 23rd. The beloved husband of the late Patricia A. (Hogan) Kelly, he was ninety five years of age.
Born in Charlestown he was the son of the late James M. and Winifred (Hannon) Kelly. Raised and educated in Somerville, Norbert was a graduate of Somerville High School along with the Class of 1940.
In 1942 he enlisted in the United States Marines and served his country proudly during World War II. Norbert served as an auto pilot mechanic during the during the War in the Midway Islands. He had achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant at the time of his departure. Norbert through out his lifetime was always a very proud veteran.
In 1948 he married his sweetheart Pat Hogan and they brought three sons into the world and he was very proud of through out the years. In 1953 they nestled into their new home in Woburn where they raised their family.
Norbert and Pat remained in Woburn for forty six years. His sons were very interested in playing hockey so Norbert along with several other gentleman helped to start the Woburn Youth Hockey program. To this day it continues to be a very successful and well run organization.
Norbert began working for the First National Stores of Boston after he returned from the service. He remained there for thirty years and then to the United Postal Service in Boston first and then Arlington, where he retired from in 1984.
Norbert and Patricia journeyed together for over fifty years, travelling to Florida to escape the cold and then to South Chatham to take in the beautiful spring and summer months, casually taking long walks on the beach and enjoying the pristine views and salty air.
Norbert was a member of the Knights of Columbus, Council 77 and the Seacoast Division of the Ancient Order of Hibernians.
Sadly Norbert was predeceased by his wife Patricia, son Norbert Kelly Jr., and his brother John F. Kelly.
