OBITUARY:

Daniel F. “Dan” Friel Jr. passed away at his home, with his beloved family at his side Sunday afternoon, January 22nd, 2017. The loving husband of Arlene (DeLuca) Friel, Dan was seventy four years of age.

Born in Woburn he was son of the late Daniel F. and Hazel (Sullivan) Friel Sr. Raised in North Woburn, Dan was educated in the Woburn Schools, graduating from Woburn High School with the Class of 1960.

While in High School Dan was very active playing the clarinet in the marching band. After high school he furthered his education attending the University of Notre Dame in South Bend IN, where he was also a member of the band. Dan graduated from Lesley College in Cambridge with a degree in Business.

Dan began working for Westinghouse Broadcasting in accounting and then sales at WBZ radio in Boston. He then had the opportunity to "go west" with his family to Ft. Wayne, Indiana where he served as the General Manager of WOWO radio. With its strong signal of 50,000 watts, WOWO – all the way from Indiana, could be heard up and down the east coast. Often times Dan's parents would sit outside in their back yard in Woburn during the summer months and listen to his nightly editorials on the radio. While in Indiana Dan had served as President of the Urban League’s Ft. Wayne Chapter. From there he spent several years as General Manager of KDKA Radio in Pittsburgh which was the first radio station in the country. Dan returned with his family to WBZ in Boston and continued working in communications until his retirement in 2007.

In 1965 he married his childhood sweetheart, Arlene. They were school friends since the second grade and have journeyed together throughout life for over fifty years. They brought three loving children into the world that he has always been so very proud of. Throughout the years, Dan was involved with his children and all of their activities. From baseball to golf, to the world of academia and vacations at the Cape and the Adirondacks, Dan was always there! He was also a very proud "Grampa" and enjoyed every moment with his grandkids including volunteering at the school library and helping out at the Reeves with their art program. Dan found great joy in giving to his children and his grandkids!

Dan and his children were avid sportsmen. They played many golf rounds at Green Meadow Country Club in NH and had the wonderful opportunity to golf together at Pebble Beach in California. Dan and his children always enjoyed the Red Sox from opening days to even attending three World Series games here in Boston (2004, 2007 & 2013). For over the last twenty years Dan had always organized the Friel family reunion. It was always a fun event for him as he loved the idea of everyone in the family spending a weekend playing golf and singing Irish music late into the evenings.

Dan also enjoyed photography throughout his years while always taking two shots of each picture to be sure of its quality. Dan was an avid reader – 3 newspapers daily and he loved books about history and sports. A very compassionate and faith filled man, Dan loved his family and enjoyed sharing this love throughout his lifetime. He did all that he could for his family and friends, in making them comfortable, happy and hopeful about anything and everything. He always achieved this with his big hugs, followed by "Thank you, thank you for everything!"

Dan was predeceased by his parents Dan and Hazel Friel Sr. He is lovingly survived by his wife Arlene (DeLuca) Friel, his children Daniel D. Friel, his wife Louise of Arlington, Kerri Anne Friel Walsh, her husband Daniel from Woburn and their youngest son Kevin M. Friel of Paradise Valley, AZ. Loving brother of John P. Friel, his wife Connie of CA, Dennis W. Friel, his wife Maureen of Woburn and Noreen (Friel) Mohler, her husband Jeffrey of PA. Brother-in-law to Donald and Diane DeLuca of Billerica, Janet Fahey of Billerica, and Richard and Andrea DeLuca of GA. Very Proud “Grampa” of Kaitlyn, Kiera, Hannah, Alyssa, Patrick and Alexander. Also survived by his loving Aunt Helene Schecowicz of Woburn, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in St. Augustine Parish, 43 Essex St., Andover, MA, Friday, January 27th, at 11:00 a.m. Relatives and friends are respectfully invited to the Lynch-Cantillon Funeral Home, 263 Main St., Woburn, Thursday evening from 3-7 p.m. or on Friday at the Church, 9:45-10:45 prior to the Funeral Mass.
